GEORGE DANES

GEORGE DANES

MONDAY-FRIDAY
9:00 am - 12:00 noon

t's a little known fact that George started his working life as an apprentice fitter and turner. However, a fascination with radio and broadcasting saw him behind the mike weekly on Citizens Military Force radio. He went on to attend Lee Murphy's Radio School in Melbourne before taking on his first broadcasting job at 7BU in Burnie, Tasmania. George worked around stations in Tasmania, Victoria and the ACT before heading to the Gold Coast to work for ABC local radio. Re-structuring of the station 13 years later provided him with the opportunity to move out of full-time radio. The ABC's loss was defiantly 94.1FM's gain. George covers the weekday slot from 9am-12noon. He sees his role as spending just 10% of his time talking, while using the other 90% to provide excellent, easy listening music. George's interest in jazz lies in the history and development of jazz, a subject that fascinates him deeply.
KAY PAXTON

KAY PAXTON

ALTERNATE TUESDAYS
3:00pm - 6:00pm
SATURDAY
9:00am - 12:00pm

Growing up in South Australia where her piano playing mother and record playing father always had music on, Kay was immersed in the sounds of Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Gershwin and contemporaries until a couple of borrowed LPs introduced her to the music of Errol Garner and Dave Brubeck. The freshness of their music left her firmly hooked on jazz. A move to London and air hostessing found Kay bemused by her friends' fixation with the Rolling Stones and the Beatles while she busily devoured the catalogues of jazz greats including Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis. Kay moved back to Australia and worked as a travel agent until her marriage. While raising her family, Kay completed a Diploma in Teaching, a Graduate Diploma in Business and a Bachelor of Education. She put her skills to good use working in high schools and at TAFE before returning to the travel industry. In 2000, Kay and her husband retired to the Gold Coast from Sydney. Kay had already developed a fondness for 94.1FM through tuning in during holidays on the Gold Coast. Invited by friends to join in the fun, she started work as a receptionist in 2000. Bill Shirley encouraged her to go on air soon after and Kay has worked many different shifts and now hosts alternate Tuesdays 3-6pm drive . Kay likes to vary her program with the jazz legends interspersed with young new generation jazz, complementing it with tracks by jazz musicians who are appearing either locally, or in Brisbane or Sydney. In addition to her work behind the microphone, Kay is a valued member of the 94.1FM sales team.

MERV DAVIES

MERV DAVIES

SUNDAYS
9:00 am - 12:00 noon

A native South East Queenslander born and educated in Brisbane and has loved music as long as he can remember. In his younger days, he was an active member of Palm Beach Surf Lifesaving Club, playing music to the beach from the Club House through loud speakers. His association with broadcasting began more than fifty years ago, when he was working with broadcast transmitters in England. He became a pioneer of television broadcasting in Australia when he joined ATN Channel 7, Sydney as Transmitter Engineer, before broadcasts began, and supervised the building of the ATN transmitter facility at Gore Hill, in Sydney. He went on to become Chief Engineer of Channel 7 and, subsequently, of RCA in Australia. With ideas on ways to overcome inherent technical deficiencies in TV transmission, throughout the world, he relocated to the USA and, with a partner, established a company to design and manufacture electronic equipment for the broadcasting industry, later expanding to include the network, recording and cable industries. After thirty years in the USA, Merv retired and returned to SE Queensland to enjoy the surfing and boating lifestyle. In addition to beginning an ongoing active and senior involvement in the Volunteer Marine Rescue organization in Southport, his love of music drew him to 94.1FM, to which he offered his experience as a volunteer technical consultant. In a very short time, he found himself in front of the microphone, presenting the music he loved. With only a brief interruption, this has been ongoing over the past seven years. Merv is a past Station Manager of 94.1FM and currently holds the position of Managing Director. He is a Life Member of the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, USA and a Life Member of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, USA.
LEILA PETERS

LEILA PETERS

MONDAY Drive Time
3:00pm - 6:00pm
FRIDAY
6.00pm - 9.00pm

Born in the northern cane country town of Ayr, Leila Peters grew up in a house with a pianola (complete with some wonderful swing rolls) and a radio, both key to the development of her love of jazz. Classical piano lessons lasted for four years before Leila gave them up to learn a succession of instruments including the cornet, trumpet, piano accordion and, until forced to choose between it and her beautiful fingernails, the guitar. With marriage and work, Leila turned her attention to working with figures until she took up real estate for 9 years before retiring. However, retirement can mean many things; Leila is a devoted community blood bank volunteer and has just been accepted into the volunteer police training program.Leila joined 94.1FM when her late husband Ron Peters, a well-known big band singer from the UK, worked with the station. Initially working on reception, Leila moved into the late Friday evening slot and now has two shows, Monday 3-6pm and Friday, 6-9pm. Leila's programming style is highly coordinated with each track flowing onto the next. When things need shaking up, Leila announces a change of mood, however, she most enjoys playing good, rhythmic music for her listeners.

PHILLIP ROSS

PHILLIP ROSS

FRIDAY
12:00pm - 3:00pm

Born in the rural town of Lismore, Philip's introduction to jazz came when he was persuaded to play 4 string bass fiddle during his teens. He subsequently joined the Stan Chilcott Orchestra, a 16-piece big band that played for the town's Saturday night dances. Busy with his work in the ambulance service, Philip married his wife Jean and they raised two children who, as students, led them to the Gold Coast in 1995. It was Jean, a systems officer with TAFE for many years, who found 94.1 in it's very earliest of days. Jean signed on as a volunteer and worked with Bob Lapthorne to organise the station's office. Bob encouraged Philip to go on air, and one day, after just 30 minutes training, Philip found himself behind the microphone. Since that "frightening experience", Philip has firmly settled into his program. His music selections come from his personal collection. With a wide range of jazz to choose from, Philip has a swing focus accompanied by a good range of blues and ballads, both old and new. He prefers to concentrate on playing jazz rather than chatting.

VIVIENNE McPHERSON

VIVIENNE McPHERSON

ALTERNATE SATURDAY'S
12:00pm - 3:00pm

MCVivienne's interests are broad, but she has always had a musical background, playing the piano from age 3. She plays guitar, congas, and the African djembe as well. A performer for many years, Vivienne's early interests led her to sing Jazz, forming a band 'Park Lane Jazz' 6 years ago which performs regularly on Tamborine Mountain. Early experiences with radio were at Macquarie University, Sydney, where she wrote radio plays, performing and producing these with a few friends - mostly social commentary heavily laced with student humour. The Goons and Monty Python were huge influences. Apart from presenting her Saturday afternoon program on 94.1fm, Vivienne teaches Primary School, sings jazz, operates Joalah Art Gallery and Studio from her secluded rainforest home, gives Art lessons and workshop experiences as well as teaching piano and Drama. Vivienne's selects the music she plays with many criteria in mind: brilliance of performance, representative of the artists, local content is also a high priority. She is always pleased to hear from local musicians who would love to have their music aired. Vivienne confesses to having a strong admiration for Tamborine Mountain musicians and takes the opportunity to promote them where she can.
You will hear swing, cool grooves, some latin and bossa, blues and, of course, the classics of Jazz.

Judy Davidson was born in Melbourne and moved to Sydney in 1989 to concentrate on a career in ICT and after 16 years in Sydney relocated to the Gold Coast in December 2004. Her friends can attest to the fact that she loves music and always has music of some kind on in the house, in the car, with her at the beach and loves listening to live music whenever time permits. Her favourites that you will no doubt hear during her programmes include Jeff Duff, Doris Day, Janet Seidel, Graeme Bell, George Shearing, Shirley Temple, Al Jolson, Bill Evans, and the big band sounds of Glenn & Herbie Miller, Artie Shaw and Count Basie. Judy has taken a hiatus from her professional career for a period of time which has allowed her to pursue interests that she otherwise wouldn't have found time for, one of which was to become a volunteer at 94.1fm. She initially volunteered as a receptionist on Saturday's, but was quickly drawn to presenting. Prior to this she was a Committee Member and Volunteer for the Northern Rivers Symphony Orchestra. Sunday afternoons from 3 - 6pm is when you can hear Judy's mix of trad, modern and smooth jazz favourites. The 2 decades Andrew considers to be one of the greatest times in recent musical history. Andrew is also keen on playing the current Jazz stars such as Michael Buble, Jamie Cullum, Renee Olstead etc. One of the special features of Andrew's programs is the complete playing of classic live recordings such as the Rat Pack live at The Sands Hotel In Las Vegas from 1963. He moved on to work at 4IP Ipswich, 2UW in Sydney, 6PR Perth and 4BK in Brisbane before turning to automotive journalism in 1973. John's love of music, and particularly jazz, began in his teenage years. His tastes matured to encompass many forms of music, but it is jazz he likes most. In addition to his 'day jobs' John also became heavily involved in record production in Sydney, which turned into a lifelong appreciation of the producers' role in creating beautiful music. He has become close friends with many of the industry's most famous producers in Australia, and all over the world, and it is this intimate look behind the scenes which informs his love and appreciation of jazz. His music selections on 94.1FM range from the 1950s through to today's Smooth Jazz styles.

COLIN JONES

COLIN JONES

TUESDAY NIGHT
6:00pm - 9:00 pm
FRIDAY NIGHT
3:00pm - 6.00pm

Born into a musical family in Byron Bay, Col Jones developed a life-long love for jazz and classical music. He spent several years at the Conservatorium in Sydney before getting his big break, playing trumpet with Tommy Steele on tour. On the advice of a friend he joined Qantas, spending nine years on 707s before settling long term in London to play trumpet professionally. The cold eventually drove him back to Australia where he owned the Swinging Vine restaurant on Caville Avenue for several years before leaving that to enjoy the life of a freelance musician. In 1995, when 94.1FM was getting started, Bill Shirley invited Col to be involved as a presenter. Having worked in community radio following his return to Australia, Col was more than keen. Today his programming is focused on providing listeners with a great range of jazz. Typically he will start his program with shorter, traditional jazz pieces, gradually moving through different styles to finish with some modern works. Drawing on music from his own extensive catalogue, Col's focus is getting the music out to his listeners.

Brian was born and raised in S.E. Queensland and comes from a musical family. While having a varied work background - Property Management - Real Estate Sales Management - Teacher - Librarian - the common thread running through all his life is music and performing. His first introduction to jazz was family gatherings in the 1950's with all styles including Trad and Dixeyland but it was the late Dakota Staton's 1950's album - " The Late Late Show" that brought Brian out of the Trad and Dixie styles. There have been many performance high lights but two stand out - The Montsalvat Jazz festival in 1992 and the 1990 Suzi Quatro Queensland tour as a member of the supporting band. His two great passions are travel and modern jazz. Travel highlights include tracking the mountain gorillas in Rwanda and a week camping in the Okavango Delta in Botswana. After living in many areas of S.E. Qld, Brian has returned to the Gold Coast to be close to his 3 daughters and 5 granddaughters. His Smooth Jazz and Blues programs on 94.1 are dedicated to providing great music by contemporary performers such as Grover Washington Jnr., Jamie Cullum, Katie Melua, David Sanborn and Dave Koz and Australian talent such as Mark Sholtez, Ingrid James, James Morrison, Catherine Hunter, Andy Cowan and DIG.
